DogHikesDFW really all started because of our dog Wylie.

​

As a puppy, he was abandoned on the side of the road with his two brothers. Tragically, two of them were hit by a car, one died on impact. Wylie injured but determined, was still on the run in a rural area for two weeks before he was finally captured before thanksgiving.

​

When we got him to the vet, the news was devastating. Wylie had a broken femur, a severed hip joint, a shattered pelvis, and a necrotic tail. Because he was so young and had been running on these injuries for so long, parts of his bones had already started to heal incorrectly. The prognosis was poor, the vet warned he might not even be able to use the bathroom on his own and suggested euthanasia, since he was "Just a stray."

But we knew Wylie deserved a fighting chance.

We amputated his tail to take pressure off his broken bones, restricted his activity, and gave him all the love and hope we had. Two years later Wylie is alive, thriving, and showing the world that no bad beginning can hold back a good soul. He's still the happiest, goofiest dog, full of energy, personality, and endless love.

As he grew older, Wylie became reactive. We tried everything; trainers, changing our home life, adjusting routine. But no matter what we did, traditional "fixes" didn't work. And that's when we realized: Wylie didn't need fixing. He just needed a different way to experience the world.

​

That's why I created DogHikesDFW, for dogs like Wylie, and for dogs like yours. We know what it feels like when your dog can't just go on a walk through the neighborhood or visit a store. It can feel isolating, like the world wasn't built for them.

​

At DogHikesDFW, we're changing that. We make sure every dog, no matter their story, has the chance to safely experience adventure, fresh air, and joy. because here, no tail and no heart is ever left behind.
